On Thursday evening, January 28th, 2021, the SLC Racial Equity in Policing Commission hosted a televised community conversation with Mayor Erin Mendenhall, SLCPD Police Chief Mike Brown, and members of the City Council aimed at listening to the needs, comments, and observations of the public in regards to changing outcomes for communities of color and their interactions with the SLC police department. Below is the video recording of this session.
On September 4th, Linden Cameron was shot eleven times by an officer of the SLCPD. Following this horrific event, body cam footage of the officer involved in the shooting was released to the public on September 22nd. After reviewing the footage of this event, the Poplar Grove Community Council strongly supports the ongoing investigation into the shooting of Linden Cameron as well as the expansion of mental health resources in the community. As residents and representatives, we stand by Mayor Mendenhall’s call for a swift and thorough investigation during this time. We also understand that since the release of the body cam footage, many residents within the area this incident took place may still harbor concern or trauma. The wellbeing, health, and safety of our neighbors is crucial to our mission and we are dedicated to reducing the barriers in accessing mental health resources across the West side of Salt Lake City. At this time, we are working closely with local, county, and state government officials in developing and improving funding and resources for this sector of our city. We will also be working closely with these channels to monitor the investigation as it continues to be carried out. We strongly urge residents needing mental support to contact the SLC Victims Advocate hotline 801-580-7969. If you’d like to donate to assist Linden Cameron’s family medical bills, donate via GoFundMe.
